Puerto de Mahon, Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

General - Puerto de Mahon is an attractive port set in a deep, long cala. It serves commercial, naval and fishing vessels as well as providing excellent facilities for yachts. The approach and entry are so easy that it is possible to enter even in storm conditions. Good shelter is found once inside. Naval and commercial vessels together with ferries have right of way over yachts inside the port.

Position - 3º 52' N 4º 18.5' E

Charts - British Admiralty 1466 Spanish 4281, 428A, 60, 6A French 5012, 5117, 5505

Approach & Entrance - From the S the conspicuous Isla del Aire with its black and white banded lighthouse is easily identified and it can be rounded on either side. Follow the coast of Menorca at 300m off. The black and white banded lighthouse on Punta de San Carlos is easily identified as is the high peninsula of La Mola. The entrance to Puerto de Mahon lies between the two. From the N the lighthouse on Cabo Favaritx, white with black diagonal stripes, can be identified. The high peninsula of La Mola and the lighthouse on it eastern extremity, Punta del Espero, are conspicuous and the entrance to Puerto de Mahon lies to the south. Enter on a NW course between La Mola and Punta de San Carlos. Pass between the port and starboard channel markers and follow the port hand coast at 150m leaving all the islands to starboard. The Club Maritimo is on the port shore just before the cala narrows significantly.

Eating Out - Numerous restaurants, cafes and bars in Mahon

Local Area - The view from the farm of San Antonio is worth the climb. Santa Maria Mayor church. Casa Mercadel museum. The fortifications at the harbour entrance are worth visiting. Prehistoric remains at Trepuco and others to the W and SW of the Mahon. British influence can be seen at both Fort Marlborough and Collingwood House and if any further evidence of the British past is required a visit to the Xoriguer Gin Distillery should provide it.
