Puerto de Blanes, Girona, Catalunya, Spain

General - Puerto de Blanes is a fishing a yachting harbour based on an old port. It lies on the Costa Brava on the NE coast of Spain. It is easy to approach and enter but strong winds from the SE - S send some swell into the harbour. The harbour gets crowded in the summer months.

Position - 41º 40' N 2º 47' E

Approach & Entrance;
From the south - The narrow coastal plain backed by a range of mountains gives way to the delta of the Rio Tordera, give this a decent berth as shoals extend out to sea. The isolated hill topped by the Castillo de San Juan which lies behind Puerto de Blanes can be seen from afar. The rocky Islets de la Palomera and El Portell lie close inshore just before the harbour. Pass them to seaward.
From the north -
Cabo Tossa with a conspicuous lighthouse and castle with towers is easily recognised. The isolated hill topped by the Castillo de San Juan which lies behind Puerto de Blanes is conspicuous from this direction. Give Punta de Santa Anna 400m and do not approach the harbour entrance until the head of the breakwater bears NW.
To enter -
Approach the head of the outer breakwater on a N course and leave it to 50m starboard. Make a slow turn to starboard and enter between the pier heads.

Berths - Try to contact the port captain prior to entry. If this is not possible moor to the fuelling berth and await instructions.

Local Area - Fine sandy beach to the W of the harbour. The local area is attractive and the town pleasant. There is a botanical garden. The 14th century church and ruined palace may be of interest. Good view from the Castillo de San Juan on the top of the hill behind the harbour.
