Approach and Entrance - From Long Island Sound make for the NE point of the North Fork, Round Orient Point and follow the S shore of the North Fork. From the Atlantic Ocean round Montauk Point at the E end on Long Island's Southern Fork then cross Block Island Sound and Gardiners Bay passing to the N of Gardiners Island and Shelter Island. Greenport lies to the N of Shelter Island. Brewer Yacht Yard at Greenport is the first set of docks on the E side of Sterling Basin. The gray yard buildings are easily seen beyond the docks.
