Calabria lies in the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of Italy. It is a narrow peninsula between the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea and Gulf of Taranto to the east. It is separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina, where the narrowest point between Capo Peloro in Sicily and Punta Pezzo in Calabria is only 2 miles.
Reggio di Calabria is located at the extreme of the mainland right on the toe of the "Italian Boot".
The following are well worth a visit while ashore; The National Museum of Greater Greece, housing the two famous Bronzi di Riace statues.The Cathedral. The Aragonese Castle, built before 540, and now home to exhibitions of art. Chiesa degli Ottimati ("Church of the Optimates"), in Byzantine-Norman style. The walls of the ancient city, one of the few examples of Greek walls still existing. Villa Zerbi, a villa in 14th-century Venetian style. It is the seat of exhibition of the Venice Biennale in southern Italy. The remains of the Roman baths. Pinacoteca Comunale (the town art gallery) housing works by Antonello da Messina, Mattia Preti, Luca Giordano and Giuseppe Benessai.
Crotone is located in the east of Calabria on the Ionian Sea
Worth a visit are; The Cathedral, originally from the 9th-11th century, but largely rebuilt. Noteworthy are a 12th century baptismal font and the Madonna di Capo Colonna, the icon of the Black Madonna which, according to the tradition, was brought from East in the first years of the Christian era. The 16th century Castle of Charles V. It houses the Town Museum. Le Castella, the ancient castle, built on an island, with accessibility on foot limited to a narrow strip of land.
