Approach and Entrance - From the Pacific Ocean head to Nehalem Bay. Wheeler Marina lies on the south shore of the bay. A long spit, part of Nehalem Bay State Park, extends south from the north shore, making the entrance to the river difficult. The controlling depth at the bar is only 4' and can drop to 3' inside the bay. The channel shifts and is only marked in the summer
